Thermodynamic equilibrium does not mean isolation. In practical applications, thermal radiation is very important. Photosynthesis stores the energy of light in chemical bonds. The heat release during combustion gives rise to heating of the environment. Quantitative characterization of the effect of these processes is not easy: the involved quantities are at best estimated and their magnitude is usually fractional or even infinitesimal. However, all energetic exchanges are thermodynamically controlled, in principle, by intensive thermodynamic parameters that change very slowly.
The stability of the equilibrium state toward shifts from the equilibrium state is the stability of the equilibrium state. The stability of equilibrium states toward changes that do not change the state is the stability of the equilibrium state. It is not customary to make this proviso part of the definition of thermodynamic equilibrium, but the converse is usually assumed: that if a body in thermodynamic equilibrium is subject to a sufficiently slow process, that process may be considered to be sufficiently nearly reversible, and the body remains sufficiently nearly in thermodynamic equilibrium during the process.
Thermodynamic equilibrium implies many other notions, including harmony of the system of states (i.e., that all conditions of the system are oriented to fulfill the maximum entropy principle). Another notion refers to the consistency of the laws of thermodynamics; an equation of the second or third law should not be contradicted by an experimental result. Domain of validity, a prime candidate for a general characteristic of thermodynamic equilibrium, is yet another notion, which, however, is not used by physicists nowadays. d2c66b5586
