Foy Vance - Joy Of Nothing (2013)

The album is produced by Vance's regular collaborator Jon Brion, who has worked with artists like Ryan Adams, Death Cab For Cutie, Jim James, The Civil Wars, and Foster The People. Brion was also responsible for Vance's first album, Hope, so it's no surprise that he plays a prominent role on the new record. The two have a great working relationship; Vance stated that he was happy with the songs that they created on Hope, but also conceded that they needed to do something different with Joy of Nothing.

Joy of Nothing is a collection of songs that are remarkably intimate, yet richly textured, and open to interpretation. At the heart of the collection is Vance's ability to strip the songs bare to their most essential elements, and he's been able to do so because he has a reliable tool kit of musical influences. As to what the songs are actually about, Vance is reluctant to offer any direct answers, and he hinted that even he has no idea what the songs are really about.

The album features a bevy of guest appearances. Vance wrote most of the songs, while a vocal from Ed Sheeran is featured on the latter two tracks. 'Closed Hand, Full of Friends', was written by Vance and partner Chris Rodriguez, while the other two songs, 'Feel for Me', and ''At Least My Heart Was Open', was written by Vance alone. Vance has said that the songs are inspired by various walks he's taken over the past 20 years. He is a big fan of post-punk, but more importantly, he's a fan of the place that Van Morrison and Bruce Springsteen are from: Appalachia. In the album, Vance also evokes the works of writers like Robert Stone, Cormac McCarthy, Flannery O'Connor, Tennessee Williams, and Cormac McCarthy, as well as referencing his own experiences with love and loss.
