The Story Behind Aerosmith's Hit Song \"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing\"
\"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing\" is a song performed by American hard rock band Aerosmith as the theme song for the 1998 sci-fi disaster film Armageddon, in which lead singer Steven Tyler's daughter Liv starred[^3^]. The power ballad was written by Diane Warren, who originally envisioned it would be performed by \"Celine Dion or somebody like that\"[^4^]. The song received its airplay premiere on May 12, 1998, and was officially added to radio a week later. In the United States, \"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing\" was originally supposed to be a radio-only single from Armageddon: The Album, but due to popular demand, Columbia Records issued the song commercially in August 1998 . It subsequently debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the band their first and only number-one single in their home country. The song also peaked at number one for multiple weeks in several other countries, including Australia, Ireland, and Norway. In the United Kingdom, it sold over one million copies and reached number four on the UK Singles Chart.
The song was inspired by a comment made by actor James Brolin about his wife Barbra Streisand in an interview with Barbara Walters. Brolin said he missed Streisand when they were asleep, and Warren wrote down the words \"I don't want to miss a thing\", before there was even a song. The song was recorded by Aerosmith with producer Matt Serletic at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. Tyler recalled that he had to sing the song five times because he could not hit the high notes. He said, \"It was hard. I'd never done that before. I had to sing it an octave lower.\"
The song received generally positive reviews from critics. Billboard wrote, \"If you're among the many who adore Aerosmith when it indulges in power balladry à la \"Angel\", then you're in for a real treat. This tune from the imminent soundtrack to \"Armageddon\" shows the enduring rock troupe happily giving in to the romance of superstar tunesmith Diane Warren's sweet tuneâbut with an appropriate dash of guitar-juiced melodrama.\" Rolling Stone praised Tyler's vocal performance and called the song \"a slice of pure pop magic\". Entertainment Weekly described it as \"a sweeping and unabashedly cheesy ballad\". Some critics, however, were less impressed. Robert Christgau gave the song a \"dud\" rating and wrote, \"Diane Warren should be ashamed of herself.\" Pitchfork ranked it at number 23 on their list of \"The 50 Worst Songs of the '90s\".
The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1999, but lost to \"When You Believe\" from The Prince of Egypt. It also received four Grammy Award nominations, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year, but did not win any. The song was covered by several artists, including country singer Mark Chesnutt, who had a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart with his version in 1999. Other notable covers include those by Celine Dion, Richard Marx, Jessica Simpson, New Found Glory, and Postmodern Jukebox. ec8f644aee
