SFF has a reluctance to categorize travelers. The transparent necessities of travel—money, food, shelter & most importantly, the ability to move—are already categories. But most of us are not in constant motion. By its nature, traveling is a mobile state, even if only for a day, and an inability to even consider the state of traveling has submerged most of the subject in the already chaotic surface of time. In SFF, the caravans and caravanserai of the nomadic people, including a few that check SFF citations, are more relatable, rather than the "I've arrived at an old-fashioned way station to get my bearings before heading to the next part of my journey."
I'm not an embodied person. Though the television show wasn't as violent as some others to be made at the time, the Disney Afternoon cartoon couldn't be seen by children, and fell into a quiet period. Do I even need to mention that getting into a T-800 cybernetic body would probably kill me?
There are many paranormal investigations of the stationary and off-grid types. Sometimes the paranormals themselves are on the move, but they operate on more "real" time scales. The investigation of the undead (or "near-dead" as many writers & gamers prefer) would be a fascinating topic.
Why haven't we done any SFF travel yet? Because we can't. That problem might soon take care of itself. A father has just begun a project to discover why his family has proven incapable of reproducing after 7 generations. This is because seven generations ago they descended from new immigrants to a densely populated modern city. The men who carried these immigrants were almost the first inhabitants of that city, and possibly a tiny degree more competent than modern-day immigrants. The other non-diverse populations are thought to have more recently arrived, and tend to be less civilized. If this is true, the family we are descended from could not reproduce.
