The Asus ZenFone 5 that shipped with Android 5.0.1 Lollipop is finally getting its upgrade to Lollipop 5.1.1 through a OTA update. The update is now rolling out to the device, but it comes with a few caveats. If you're on the ZenFone 5, Android 5.0.1 Lollipop will no longer get security updates, and you'll have to manually download the update.
Android 5.1.1 is rolling out to the Asus ZenFone 5 in select areas for those who are enrolled in the beta program, but those are pretty much the only ones. How long it will take to get the update to everyone on the second-generation ZenFone 5 is anyone's guess, but we can expect the OTA to be released at some point this week. It's a good thing that this is only a bug fix release for this particular device.
This morning, the Android 5.1.1 update was rolling out to the Asus ZenFone 5, however, some users were reporting that the update was being delayed by carrier, and the phone wouldn't get the update until the 24th or the 27th. That delay makes sense, as carriers usually take a while to roll out OTA updates to devices. If your phone isn't connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data, though, it's possible you're being served the OTA update right now, so keep an eye out. If you don't see the update in the notification bar, you can force it to download manually on the device's settings menu.
Once the Android 5.1.1 update is finally pushed to your device, you can also update to version 3.9.7 of Asus's custom interface, ZenUI, and get some bug fixes as well. The update to the interface should only affect the homescreen, and it's a small change that will most likely not break anything on your device. ZenUI 3.9.7 adds support for the new widget function, and it's also adding a few bug fixes as well.
The 5.0.1 Lollipop update for the ZenFone 4 can be downloaded through the ZenFone 4 app on the Google Play Store. As always, your mileage may vary depending on your individual device. We'll be keeping an eye on Asus' updates to find out how well they work on our own devices.
It looks like Asus is headed back to the dessert with their Lollipop update for the ZenFone 4. As of this writing, Asus only has a partial update available for owners of the ZenFone 4 (J01). The other features, including the new ZenUI, won't be available until the full update rolls out. The update notes for the new UI apparently contain a typo that makes the release date of the full update for the ZenFone 4 well overdue.
